The Columbus Metropolitan Main Library reopens to the public Saturday, June 25th, after a 16 month long renovation. The dedication and ribbon cutting will begin at noon, with free entertainment and activities to follow. The main library was built in 1907, and the expansion beyond the Carnegie building was finished in 1991. The $35 million dollar renovation has transformed the old building into a more modern, open, and light-filled space for the Columbus community to enjoy.
Check out this short video we made for a sneak peak of the new library:
One of the main objectives of the renovation was to create a grand reading room that could be used for public speaking events. By removing a floor plate from the third floor, they created a Grand Reading Room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and ample seating. The room offers plenty of natural light and sweeping views of the outdoor plaza and Topiary Park.

Integrating new and up-to-date technology was another main focus for the library. Every floor has an interactive "discovery board" with a map and list of things to do. Free wi-fi is available throughout the building and outside reading area. The second floor has 72 public computers, including "15 minute computers" for a quick email checks or print jobs.
Although the library is very open, many spaces have been created for specific purposes. There are 7 meeting rooms and 7 quiet reading rooms. There are spaces intentionally designed for every age - kids, tweens, teens, and adults.
The Carnegie Cafe on the first floor offers snacks, coffee, and other drinks that can be enjoyed inside or outside on the walk-out plaza. The plaza, facing Topiary Park, has a reading space with covered tables and chairs and a stage for live music.
The new main library is a beautiful building and we truly enjoyed creating these videos to help show it off. Stop by this Saturday to explore the building, sign up for a commemorative library card, enjoy a free jazz concert, and/or catch a screening of The Lorax! Free parking is available in the underground parking garage.
